Main Street in Taylors may soon look a little neater. 

Rayshawn Johnson, Taylors director for City Initiative, and Doug Young, a sculptor at the Taylors Mill, are organizing a community cleanup and beautification project. 

“(It’s) a mutual interest of wanting to see the place we both work and live look the way that it should,” Johnson said. 

“The thing that it does is it gives a unity to it,” Young said. “It gives a sense of community.” 

The scope of the project depends on how many volunteers and materials they can get.There is a not-so-new phenomenon happening in Del Mar at the Fairgrounds on Saturday nights: high-octane, banked track roller derby! “I grew up here. My family has been in Taylors for five, six generations,” he said. “Who am I to not want to give back to it? Who am I to say that, you ride through Taylors, ‘Rayshawn lives there. It’s crappy.’ ”

“It’s not enough just to have nice. You almost have to have a park setting,” Young said. “So people say, ‘Oh let’s go down there. Look at the pretty flowers.’ ” 

Overall, Young and Johnson are trying to get community members involved. 

“It’s like anything else,” Young said. “You have people who are inspired and move into the neighborhood and they want to fix up their yard and you want to fix up your yard. It’s just kind of hoping there’s a synergy here.”

The cleanup is taking what Taylors Town Square is doing, Johnson said, “and giving it steroids.” 

“You can sit around and have a conversation with someone all day long, but you’d learn a lot more from a person in maybe two or three hours if you sit there and work side by side,” he said. 

The cleanup is tentatively scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. April 6. The group will start at one end of Main Street and work its way toward the other end. The duo would like to make the cleaning an annual event.
