  • NSF Funds Efforts to Establish a New Center Aimed at Making Industrial Drying More Efficient and Sustainable

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a planning grant to Worcester Polytechnic Institute and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to support the creation of the Center for Advanced Research in Drying (CARD), a public-private partnership in which leading U.S. companies will propose critical industry problems for study. This is the first center in the United States dedicated to developing energy-efficient technologies for drying moist,The Spectrophotometer is an instrument which measures the amount of light of a specificed wavelength which passes through a medium. porous materials, a problem affecting the competitiveness of U.S. manufacturers across a wide range of industries.
CARD will be jointly operated by the two universities and led by WPI under the direction of Jamal Yagoobi, professor and chair of WPI's Department of Mechanical Engineering and an internationally known expert on drying and electrohydrodynamics, the study of the dynamics of electrically charged fluids. For mains, there is a choice of Wild Rice’s ‘Chinese Fish ‘n Chips’ (beer-battered ling cod, Asian Tartar Sauce, taro shoestring frites) or its ‘meaty’ Grilled king oyster mushroom (with cashew ricotta and polenta fries). Hao Feng, professor of food science and human nutrition at the University of Illinois, will be the Illinois site director for CARD.
CARD will invite participation and sponsorship from corporations and associations in industries that include paper, forestry, agriculture, food, chemicals, textiles, and biopharmaceuticals. Drying, which is one of the most energy-intensive processes in manufacturing, typically accounts for a significant portion of all the energy used by these industries. By developing new technologies and processes, CARD will seek to significantly reduce the energy required to dry materials and lower the carbon footprint for this important industrial sector.
"Ultimately, research breakthroughs in this area will strengthen the competitiveness of U.S. manufacturers," said Yagoobi, who will also serve as CARD's lead principal investigator. "In addition to energy efficiency and sustainability, the development of new drying technologies and processes for moist, porous materials will improve product quality, process efficiency, corporate profitability, and global competitiveness."
"CARD will be a highly collaborative center focused primarily on applied research," noted Feng. "Members will submit and vote on the problems that we study. We look forward to working with corporate sponsors, strategic partners, national laboratories, and industry associations to achieve a range of transformative breakthroughs in drying processes."
The complexity of this challenge will require a multidisciplinary research effort, including mechanical engineering, combustion, food and agriculture, mathematics, electro-mechanical systems, and other disciplines. WPI and the University of Illinois bring all of these research strengths to the center,Highly capable, 3-axis non-contact video measuring machine, suitable for both simple shop-floor quality control and advanced manufacturing inspection applications ... as well as highly specialized laboratory facilities, faculty, and graduate and undergraduate students studying these fields.
The planning grant was funded through the NSF's Industry/University Cooperative ResHe has dried mushrooms all year and fresh mushrooms in season. I/UCRCs were developed to encourage collaboration between industry and academia in the development of novel processes and methods to solve grand challenges confronting the United States. WPI is the lead institution on one existing I/UCRC (the Center for Resource Recovery and Recycling); Illinois is the lead on one such center (the Center for Agricultural, Biomedical, and Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology) and the co-lead on two others (the Power Systems Engineering Research Center and the Center for Laser and Plasma for Advanced Manufacturing).
With funds from the NSF planning grant, WPI will host a planning meeting on the WPI campus on Aug. 13-14, 2013, to discuss potential research projects and other research-related activities of CARD.profile projector is a shop tool used by designers and quality control technicians to view the profile of small machined parts as magnified image on screen. • Smelter workers set productivity record

Tiwai Pt aluminium smelter workers have broken records for production per person at the plant.
New Zealand Aluminium Smelters acting general manager Stewart Hamilton said the January to March quarter productivity reached 416 tonnes per person - the equivalent of 25 million aluminium cans.
He said the figure included fulltime and contract workers.
It was the first time workers at the 42-year-old smelter had achieved more than 400 tonnes per person, which was double the productivity in 1995, he said.
The old record was set in a three-month period in 2007, when workers achieved 390 tonnes per person. Total output in the 2007 quarter was 352,Highly capable, 3-axis non-contact video measuring machine, suitable for both simple shop-floor quality control and advanced manufacturing inspection applications ...000 tonnes by 900 workers, including contractors.
Total production in January to March this year was 322,000 tonnes produced by 800 workers, including contractors.
"Times are tough here, and workers can do nothing about outside circumstances such as power prices, aluminium prices and the exchange rate but they can control productivity and that is something they are doing well," Mr Hamilton said.
Even though the plant was 15 per cent down in production, workers were still producing the purest aluminium in the world at the highest tonnage per person. Our full range of portable ultrasonic Flaw Detector (UT) provides unmatched capabilities for locating discontinuities and other flaws.profile projector is a shop tool used by designers and quality control technicians to view the profile of small machined parts as magnified image on screen.
Workers were not doing more work,He has dried mushrooms all year and fresh mushrooms in season. "We also collect mushrooms from foragers. they were just more efficient, he said. A lot of effort had gone into improving the efficiency of the smelting process and fixing inefficiency in other areas.
The figures were part of a smelter performance presentation, which he recently gave to smelter owners Pacific Aluminium.
The figures also showed carbon burning at the plant had reduced.
The amount of capital spent since 1990 had gone up significantly in the past few years, with more than $100 million spent on machinery such as a new ship unloader and transformers .
"A lot of people say we are hasbeens at 40 years old and our time is done. These figures show we have had our midlife refurbishment and we can continue for many more years," Mr Hamilton said.
He was hopeful the smelter would strike a power deal with Meridian Energy and continue production for another 40 years.
Meridian Energy is next off the block in the Government's asset selldown programme. It would be interesting to see how that plays out for the smelter, he said.
"They want to get something done and we want to get something done and its just a matter of time. They are complex negotiations but they are still talking, which is good".The Spectrophotometer is an instrument which measures the amount of light of a specificed wavelength which passes through a medium.

  • Life is a breeze in customised wheelchair

WOULD you wear a pair of shoes that is two sizes too big or three sizes smaller? They would most probably be very uncomfortable to walk around in. Continuous use could cause a host of problems to the feet, ankles and knees.
Likewise, a poor fitting wheelchair could cause anything from backaches to postural problems and pressure sores. It is, therefore, important for wheelchair users to use one that is properly customised to fit the body.
My first wheelchair had a reclining back rest.Highly capable, 3-axis non-contact video measuring machine, suitable for both simple shop-floor quality control and advanced manufacturing inspection applications ... It was so heavy that two persons were needed to put it into the car boot whenever I went out. I could only push it for a short distance. My subsequent wheelchairs were all off-the-shelf hospital types. Our full range of portable ultrasonic Flaw Detector (UT) provides unmatched capabilities for locating discontinuities and other flaws.
I yearned for one that was more aesthetically pleasing, lighter and easier to manoeuvre. I also wanted one that would last longer than three or four years before breaking down. Those that I saw on the Internet were very expensive and not available locally.
Sometime in 2010, I had saved enough and decided to get my first fully customised manual wheelchair. I could not get a seating therapist in Malaysia who could measure me properly. Fortunately, I found a wealth of information on customising wheelchairs on an online forum on spinal cord injury called the Care Cure Community.
Members of this forum consist of doctors, nurses, occupational therapists and wheelchair users who were very generous with their knowledge and experience. I asked a lot of questions and got a lot of useful advice and suggestions.
All in all, I spent three months researching on what would work for me. Different levels of paralysis require different settings. All factors were taken into consideration, including the tyres and type of push rims for the wheels. In the end, I was still not sure if I got all the measurements right.
The frame of the wheelchair that I was using then was partially broken. It was still usable but could break any time.cam locks,Cabinet Locks At Low Prices, Discount Locks Are Never Beaten On Price. We are the UK's Number 1 Supplier of Locks and Safes. It was in urgent need of a replacement. Throwing caution to the wind, I placed the order through an online store dealing in such equipment in the United States.
The price from the online store was more than 30 per cent lower than that of retail. Even then, it cost me RM12,000 of which 1/10 of it went towards courier charges. The back wheels and cushion made up the other major components of the cost.
It was a nail-biting one month as I waited for it to arrive. One wrong measurement could render it useless. It would be an expensive mistake that I could ill afford. I never stopped worrying until the day it was delivered to my doorstep. The Spectrophotometer is an instrument which measures the amount of light of a specificed wavelength which passes through a medium.
The moment I sat on it, I realised that it was money well-spent. It was light and very manoeuvrable. My feet were positioned in a way that it reduced spasms. My posture improved tremendously.
The frame was made from aerospace-grade titanium. This material is more durable than aluminium which is more commonly used for wheelchairs. Titanium is also twice as expensive and more difficult to work on.
Being a rigid wheelchair, it is not foldable. This makes pushing more efficient. Energy used for propelling is not lost in the flexing of the movable parts like that of a folding wheelchair. This also translates into it being lighter, requiring less maintenance and there being less possibility of parts breaking down.
Figuratively speaking, it fitted me like a glove. I was seated at a height that allowed optimal pushing. The seat was configured in such a way that I no longer slid down and had to pull myself back up all the time. I could sit longer hours without my body feeling strained. I have never felt so comfortable in a wheelchair before.
One of the problems associated with prolonged wheelchair use is repetitive strain injury, especially of the shoulders, elbows, wrists and hands. Tendons on the shoulders can become torn. The head of humerus, the upper arm bone, could become worn out.
At its worst, surgeries would be required to correct these problems. It would then take many months of rest and rehabilitation. Even then, one could never regain full strength or function after that.
My shoulders and wrists were beginning to show symptoms of such injuries. I was afraid of losing the use of my arms as I needed them for transferring myself and performing most of my activities of daily living. A full-blown injury would cause me to be bedridden and rob me of my independence.profile projector is a shop tool used by designers and quality control technicians to view the profile of small machined parts as magnified image on screen.
As the result of spinal cord injury, I am living with a number of health issues that I could not have prevented. However, I am in a position to protect my shoulders from further injuries.
With that in mind, I feel that the amount I paid for the customised wheelchair is a worthwhile investment. As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

  • U.S. Labor Department's MSHA releases first quarter 2013 fatality data

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration today released a summary of U.S. mining deaths that occurred during the first quarter of calendar year 2013.
Between Jan. 1 and March 31, 11 miners died in workplace accidents.Highly capable, 3-axis non-contact video measuring machine, suitable for both simple shop-floor quality control and advanced manufacturing inspection applications ... Eight fatalities occurred in coal mines, while three occurred in metal/nonmetal mines. Six coal miners were killed in less than one month,For mains, there is a choice of Wild Rice’s ‘Chinese Fish ‘n Chips’ (beer-battered ling cod, Asian Tartar Sauce, taro shoestring frites) or its ‘meaty’ Grilled king oyster mushroom (with cashew ricotta and polenta fries). four of them in West Virginia, which prompted increased action by MSHA; the agency issued a safety alert,Titanium Pipe is made by cold rolling process from extruded pipe blanks. They are widely used in heat exchangers and off-shore equipment. and MSHA inspectors, supervisors and managers traveled throughout the state to advise miners, miners’ representatives, mining supervisors and operators about this trend.
In coal mining, two miners each died in machinery, powered haulage and roof fall accidents. One miner each died in accidents involving exploding vessels under pressure and hoisting.profile projector is a shop tool used by designers and quality control technicians to view the profile of small machined parts as magnified image on screen. In metal/nonmetal mining, one miner each died in accidents involving fall of highwall, machinery, titanium alloy property information is scattered amongst a number of disparate sources. and explosives and breaking agents.
MSHA has undertaken a number of measures to prevent mining deaths, injuries and illnesses, including increased surveillance and strategic enforcement through impact inspections at mines with troubling compliance histories; enhanced pattern of violations actions; special initiatives such as “Rules to Live By,” which focuses attention on the most common causes of mining deaths; and outreach efforts with mining stakeholders.
Mining fatality and injury rates were the lowest ever in 2011. Preliminary data for 2012 show that mine safety continues to move in the right direction with fatality rates for all mining reaching an all-time low: .0107 deaths per 200,000 hours worked. The rate of reported injuries was 2.56 per 200,Our full range of portable ultrasonic Flaw Detector (UT) provides unmatched capabilities for locating discontinuities and other flaws.000 hours worked, also the lowest rate on record.
“It has taken the efforts of MSHA and the entire mining industry to reach these milestones,” said Joseph A. Main, assistant secretary of labor for mine safety and health. “But while mining deaths and injuries are at historic lows, more action is needed by all of us to prevent mining injuries, illnesses and deaths.”

  • Forecast of the future

In the next few decades, technology and biology will merge in the form of blood-cell-sized supercomputers that will exponentially increase the mental capacity and lifespan of human beings. Our full range of portable ultrasonic Flaw Detector (UT) provides unmatched capabilities for locating discontinuities and other flaws. Our power needs will be met, our reliance on fossil fuels broken, and everyone will be fed and nourished on a diet of organic, chemical-free vegetables grown hydroponically in high rises controlled by synthetically intelligent computer systems.
Need a new trachea? No problem—it can be produced by 3-D printers and with biological matter grown from your own skin cells. If and when this planet, or even this galaxy, becomes too crowded with long-lived, super-intelligent human beings, there are plenty of other galaxies out there, all of which will be within reach in a few hundred years.
This is the future according to author, inventor and futurist Ray Kurzweil, who spoke at Laxson Auditorium last Friday (April 12) in the latest installment of Chico State University’s President’s Lecture Series. Kurzweil’s presentation was titled “The Acceleration of Technology in the 21st Century: The Impact on Business, the Economy,The Spectrophotometer is an instrument which measures the amount of light of a specificed wavelength which passes through a medium. and Society & How to Retain Our Humanity Through It.”
Chico State President Paul Zingg didn’t hold back his adulation while introducing Kurzweil, likening him to Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin and saying his appearance was on par with Nobel and poet laureates who have appeared on campus.
Zingg listed a brief rundown of Kurzweil’s accomplishments, which include inventing the first synthesizer capable of accurately recreating any orchestral instrument and text-to-voice recognition machines to help the blind. Kurzweil, Zingg said, holds 19 honorary doctorates, and has been recognized by Presidents Lyndon Johnson, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton.
Zingg noted that in Kurzweil’s first book, 1990’s The Age of Intelligent Machines, he “predicted the emergence of the World Wide Web, a computer winning the world chess championship, the emergence of ‘intelligent’ weapons and the ability for computers even to win on Jeopardy!”
Kurzweil’s current tour is in support of his latest book, How to Create a Mind: The Secret of Human Thought Revealed. He is also head of engineering at Google and was named by the Public Broadcasting Service as one of 16 “revolutionaries who made America.”
Kurzweil began his presentation with some personal history, saying he knew he wanted to be an inventor by the age of 5, and soon after began collecting electronic devices and machinery in various states of repair. He recalled looking over his inventory as a child and thinking, “If I can figure out how to put these together, I can solve anything.”
While Kurzweil’s claims of what’s to come in the not-so-distant future may rival a science-fiction writer’s flights of fancy, he explained they are in fact grounded in science, profile projector is a shop tool used by designers and quality control technicians to view the profile of small machined parts as magnified image on screen. and he had graphs to prove it. His analysis and predictions are based on a rule of his own creation called “The Law of Accelerating Returns.”
He explained he developed this theory as a way to set timelines for his own inventions. Timing is everything in inventing, titanium alloy property information is scattered amongst a number of disparate sources. he explained, and new technologies are not generally successful if they come too far ahead or behind their time. Thus, he created the law to map out his own long-term projects so that by the time they are perfected, the world will be ready for them and his work wouldn’t be nullified by getting beaten to the punch.
The Law of Accelerating Returns rejects the commonly accepted idea that technology progresses on a linear path, arguing that it instead grows exponentially. New technologies help us develop even better technologies, Kurzweil said. According to his formula, we can’t compare advancements to come in the 21st century to the progress made in the last century.Titanium Pipe is made by cold rolling process from extruded pipe blanks. They are widely used in heat exchangers and off-shore equipment. By this rate, he predicts the next 100 actual years will represent the past 20,000 years of progress.
To illustrate this, he noted spoken language—the first human-invented informational technology—took hundreds of thousands of years to develop. It took tens of thousands of years to develop that into written language, and considerably less time to invent the printing press. Radio, television, the Internet and other technologies are now developing at a much faster, exponential rate, and Kurzweil believes this will continue.
While he has an idea of what might come in time, he admitted there are things of which even he cannot dream. He said if you were able to meet the first speaking humans, they would have had no conception of the things language would eventually enable, like the development of art and music. Our future, likewise, holds concepts as-yet undiscovered and undreamed of by humanity.
Kurzweil said the next big leaps and bounds will be in how we can evolve our own bodies and brains, largely due to the Human Genome Project. Before the human genome was mapped in the early 2000s, health and medicine were not “informational systems” subject to the Law of Accelerating Returns, he explained. Now that they are, we will see them progress at rates similar to how we’ve seen computers and other technology develop in the last 50 years.
Kurzweil acknowledged there is still a disparity between the “haves and have-nots,” but that technological advancement is the key to ending this someday. He also said as these technologies emerge, they may initially be available only to the wealthy, but will eventually benefit everyone.
“Just look at cell phones,” he said, pointing out that 20 years ago they were an expensive novelty. “Now the technology is much better and they’re available to everybody.”
