In order to work on the type of security that would be needed in case an intruder entered the building, such as in the Newtown, Conn. elementary school shootings last December, lock-down drills were to be done in all of the town's schools this week.

Somerset School Superintendent Richard Medeiros said that letters were sent home to parents last week, informing them of the lock-down drills. He said Somerset police officers would be at the schools for the drills.

Police Chief Joseph Ferreira said two of the lock-down drills were done on Monday. He said staff and students responded well to a scenario in which the principal announced there was an intruder in the building, although he could not give details because he did not want to sacrifice security.

"I think it's a good way to get the staff and the teachers engaged in the process that has been in place for a long time, to remind them," Chief Ferreira said of the drill.

Chief Ferreira said lock-downs are not always the best way to respond to an intruder in the building. He said he also wants staff in the buildings to be able to think on their feet during the lock down. Ms. Sheehan said that Chace Street School Principal Deborah Cimo has started a security team at her school and suggested that maybe the schools should have a device that people have to swipe a card through in order to get into a school building. During the school day, Mr. Medeiros said there is only one door at North Elementary School that people can access and they have to push a buzzer where they are identified before being let into the building.

Ms. Sheehan said teachers are still concerned about security in the schools. She said she does not want the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in Connecticut to be forgotten and for the school system to let its guard down on its security system.

Somerset School Committee Chairman Jamison Souza said that police receive money from drug busts that could be used to further enhance security in schools.
