CSG survey results－linecoupler

AUSTRALIANS are poorly informed about coal seam gas (CSG) and overwhelmingly opposed to its development on productive agricultural land, according to a survey commissioned by think tank, the Australia Institute (AI).

The survey found 89 per cent of people support granting farmers rights to 'lock the gate' to CSG, 96pc are opposed to CSG extraction if it reduces the productivity of agricultural land and 56pc oppose CSG on agricultural land even if the landowner consents.

AI authored the survey’s questions and employed social research and survey company MyOpinions to canvass the views of 1400 people in August.

The people polled were selected to provide a representative sample of demographics Australia-wide, AI said.

When asked to list the two main benefits of CSG, 39pc of respondents listed more jobs and 37pc increased economic activity.
