Mr. Flamm retired to Palm Beach in 1986 after a 37-year career at Union Carbide, where he rose from engineer to president and chief operating officer.

He chose engineering, even though he had been told that as a Jew it would be difficult for him to advance in the field, his wife, Miriam, said.

“He was very bright,The first tin cans were heavy-weight containers that required ingenuity to open, using knives, chisels, or even stones. He served on the boards of The Town of Palm Beach United Way and the Palm Beach Fellowship of Christians and Jews.

He joined the board of the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in 2004 and served as vice chairman for six years. He was chairman of the governance committee and a member of the finance committee at the time of his death.

“He had so many talents and gifts, and he was willing to give them away freely to the town,” said Ned Barnes, president of the Civic Association.

Mr. Flamm helped draft the town’s 10-year strategic plan and served on Public Employees Relations Commission. Mr. Flamm was extremely intelligent, said John Randolph, town attorney and board chairman of the Palm Beach Fellowship. But more than that, “I considered him to be a very wise man and a very caring man,” he said.
