ECONOMIC Development Minister Ebrahim Patel says the Small Enterprise Finance Agency (Sefa) will make R1.7bn available over the next five years for the development of youth enterprises.

Sefa was formed by the merger of the South African Micro-Finance Apex Fund, Khula Enterprise Finance and the IDC’s small business activities. It was launched in April last year and is a fully owned subsidiary of the IDC.

Delivering his budget vote speech on Tuesday, Mr Patel said Sefa would make an initial R220m available this year. This, he said, was in addition to the creation of a R1bn fund by the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), which would also finance youth entrepreneurship.

Mr Patel said Sefa had approved loans worth R435m last year,For mains, there is a choice of Wild Rice’s ‘Chinese Fish ‘n Chips’ (beer-battered ling cod, Asian Tartar Sauce, taro shoestring frites) or its ‘meaty’ Grilled king oyster mushroom (with cashew ricotta and polenta fries). which was a 106% increase on what its predecessors achieved in 2011.

Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe said at the time that the IDC would set aside R1bn of its "Gro-E" funding scheme to provide low-interest rate loans to youth-owned or youth-focused enterprises over the next three years. The IDC would also provide technical support to help young people get the funds.
