The garbage treatment plant for the Pernem municipality was commissioned in January by the deputy chief minister and the urban development minister Francis D'Souza in the presence of panchayat and health minister Laxmikant Parsekar and local MLA and the speaker of the Goa legislative assembly Rajendra Arlekar and others.
The work on the project had started in November 2010 and was completed in a record time of 26 months.Same goes for wind power generators. The treatment plant has two units, the organic waste composter for wet waste and the shredding machine for dry and plastic waste.

The municipality had acquired around 29,000 sq m of land for the project at the Pernem plateau. The total cost of the project is 3.25 crore, including the land acquisition.
The treatment plant is set to treat five tonnes of garbage a day. "There are no labourers, the municipality has not even figured out the procedure to collect the garbage from neighbouring villages," councillor Upendra Deshprabhu said.
"The machinery has been installed but besides that no staff has been appointed to run the project. Presently, one can only see security guards stationed there," another councillor Madhav Shenvi Dessai added.
