But the 31-year-old senior associate knows how to let off steam. And her colleagues know, without asking, what happened when she shows up at the office banged up a bit.
“I don’t go to court. I draft documents in my office all day,” Vomund said. “That’s why I play roller derby.”
Vomund, known to many as Mayor Francis Slayer, is captain of the Arch Rival Roller Girls, St. Louis’ flat track roller derby team. It’s an all-star team that travels to compete in other cities. Vomund also coaches the training and men’s teams. The league takes competition in the throwback sport seriously.
“I walk into work with a lot of bruises and injuries, but I’ve never had a black eye,Most Verizon phone and Internet connections were down Monday morning and afternoon because a major Fiber Optic Patch Cable was accidentally cut.” Vomund said.
Roller derby has been around for decades. When it was most recently revived in the mid-2000s, it had a clear rockabilly aesthetic: Tattooed women with funny nicknames wailed into each other in kitschy quad skates, fishnets and hot pants.
The sport is much more athletic and regulated than in the old days, Vomund said. The thrice-weekly multihour practices begin with calisthenics and stretching, followed by drills and scrimmages. But some funny pinuppy elements remain.
“I’m in a minority of skaters who have no tattoos,” Vomund said.I couldn't quite find another micro gearmotor on the Pololu site that met the specs. But one of the posts on the previous thread mentioned a nice 56:1 gear motor that met the specs
The skater names, too, recall eras when the sport was more cartoonish. Vomund herself began skating in 2006 with the Slayer nomenclature, which did a good job of evincing civic pride while being vaguely threatening.
“There are probably hundreds of people in the city who call me Mayor instead of Courtney,” Vomund said. “In other cities it is a baffling name. When the mayor is done with his term, I’ll have to quit derby!”
Not likely. Vomund devotes hours each week to her sport, leaving the office to make practices and diving back into work after the workouts. She just married Oodles of Brutal, a fellow derby player also known as Chris Vomund.
