The federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid signed off on the psychiatric hospital’s correction plan, and this year, the Legislature approved the creation of a 24/7 Psychiatric Urgent Assessment Center, which opened this month. The center is supposed to help keep the mentally ill out of the valley’s emergency rooms and speed the transfer of such patients out of ERs, which aren’t equipped or staffed to treat them. 

But the most immediate result of the policy changes and heightened scrutiny at the hospital has been much slower patient processing. Admissions and discharges are far more deliberate. Because it takes longer for Rawson-Neal beds to open, the mentally ill are turning to emergency rooms to wait for a bed to become available.

"We just have to try to make that up by planting more fall crops like spinach and radishes and turnips and things like that," Erskine said. 

Farmers say drastic temperatures and fluctuating seasons could be a result of excess carbon in the atmosphere. 

"We already have a really small window in Idaho for our crops, and with the fluctuation in weather, you see that window close even more," Requa said. 

The fewer crops produced by farmers means a heftier price tag for you at the grocery store. 

So, what can you do? Farmers say buying locally-grown fruits and veggies will cut back on trucking costs. 

"If everybody in the nation just ate one meal a week from all local products, it would make a huge difference,” Erskine said. “So I think just buying locally is a huge part of reducing the carbon impact of what we grow and what we eat.
